Mary Ann Proffitt Obituary

MaryAnn Proffitt, born on January 13, 1948, in Harrogate, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at the age of 78 in her home in Harriman, Tennessee, surrounded by her beloved children and grandchildren. After a fulfilling career at the University of Tennessee, from which she retired in her late forties, MaryAnn dedicated her life to her family and her passions.

An avid reader and film connoisseur, MaryAnn had a profound appreciation for the humanities. Her creative spirit was evident in the many sewing projects she undertook throughout her life; her handmade creations continue to be cherished by her family today.

Known for her resolute mindset and unwavering strength, MaryAnn was one of the most independent women anyone had the privilege to know. She lived her life on her own terms and held a deep faith in God that guided her through every challenge.

She is preceded in death by her mother, MaryRuth Muncy; her father, Hubert Muncy; and brother, David Muncy.

She is survived by her two daughters, Mona (Mike) Tarver and Anna Gaenslen; four grandchildren, Jordan Tarver, Aaryn (Alex) Porter, Hunter Gaenslen, and Austyn Gaenslen; one great-grandchild, Layne Tarver; and brother, Jack (Beverly) Muncy.

A celebration of MaryAnn’s life will be held at 5pm on May 8, 2026 at Fraker Funeral Home. Flowers can be sent to Fraker Funeral Home, or donations may be made in her name to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

MaryAnn will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
